Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
