Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
