In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
