Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
