European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
