At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
